Bennie and the Tiger by Anonymous
The Story
Bennie is a normal kid who likes reading and hanging out with her buddy Sam. But their quiet life gets a jolt when she spots the zoo's Bengal tiger staring at her with crazy, human-like eyes. Next, the tiger is gone, and so is Mr. Finch, the secretive old zookeeper. Bennie starts digging for clues – a ripped old map, a weird phone message – and she heads out, leaving the zoo behind. She’s chased through a nighttime park and into a fairground where things get really strange. Who is the tiger, and why does it lead her deeper into danger? That’s her journey.
Why You Should Read It
This book gets it right about friendship and facing things alone. Bennie is braver than she thinks, and Sam is the guy you’d want by your side. The writing is warm and sharp – a good, simple style that focuses on the suspense. I also liked how the story doesn't spell out everything. The villain stays just mysterious enough to jump off the page. This book works best for older kids and teens who want real stakes. There are chills, quiet winks of humor, and enough heart to keep it from being too scary.
Final Verdict
You should pick this up if you like mysteries, slight spooks, and a main character you can root for from page one. Fans of Holes or The Mysterious Benedict Society will love sleeping with a light on after reading it. Perfect for thrill-seeking tweens and their grown-up book club buds.
