By end of October, “the works of the Department generally … were restored.” Yet the report also records a deliberate contraction: “the trade to several of the ports having considerably diminished,” the author recommended reducing staff by 13 officers and men, saving £1,932 annually. Lights, Gas, and Future Needs

The report surveys lighthouse equipment, noting that sites were “selected with great care and judgment” and that illuminating apparatus (except Cape Moreton) is “of the most modern description,” supplied by Chance Bros. of Birmingham. It observes that steam vessels are “fast superseding sailing vessels,” increasing traffic along the coast and soon requiring additional lights. Pintsch's gas for beacons and buoys is mentioned as adopted elsewhere, with advantages of cheapness and no need for lightkeepers.
