Rogers argues that all three were likely built during Arthur's years in Pittsfield, not the original 1794 Byfield machine, cautioning that claims of an "original Scholfield woolen card" are romantic but unsubstantiated.

Technical Details and Material Evidence

The author provides a close analysis of the National Museum machine's construction. The woods used—white pine, birch, maple, chestnut—are all native to New England. The frame joints are numbered and matched at the doffing end (I to IIII) but mismatched at the feed end (V to VIII), suggesting original assembly errors. The comb plate shows irregular tooth size and pitch over two-thirds of its length, which Rogers attributes to hand-filing before the "teeth-cutting machine" was smuggled from England.
